Internet Café Business

So you’ve decided to try your luck in business, good for you

.
And despite all the warnings from naysayers you still chose to build your very own Internet Café.

This must be a byproduct of growing up and playing (and blowing all your allowance) hundreds of hours in your local café. All the while wondering how great it must feel to be able to play all day. To be around people you like while earning. To be the “Kuya”!

But an Internet Café business? Now? It seems like a bad investment, right? Because a lot of them opened and closed without gaining back capital.

It got tagged as a bad business. In truth, many opened shop because they saw it as a fad and blindly invested. Having limited business and technical knowledge to handle operations, most were doomed from the start.

Closed Internet Cafe

To tell you frankly, I thought the business was dying.

Free WIFI, cheap smart phones, an unhealthy price war, free mobile access to Facebook, uber popular mobile games and online gaming via console. All of these factors in its own way have affected the popularity and viability of the Internet Cafes.

Some of the factors above have been brought about by a change in user or customer preferences. Which in turn has been brought about by an advance in technology and user experience. Every metric points to a future MOBILE world. So how does a Brick and Mortar Computer Rental Business compete with the mobile age?

mobile age

A Smart Mobile Phone user can access their social media and choose any game from a massive library. Two common activities of Internet Cafe users.

But there is something that an Internet Café can provide that mobile gaming can’t. It’s companionship and camaraderie – the type of experience that can only be enjoyed by being physically present and in close proximity to your peers. Let’s be real, it’s a better feeling to get that TRIPLE KILL while being surrounded by your screaming team instead of being home alone in front of your computer. It’s probably an infinitely magical experience when you do it in front of adoring fans during an eSports event.

eSport

The Rise of eSports and Competitive Communities gave the Internet Café a boost.

The rise of competitive gaming, the popularity of Massive Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games and worldwide acceptance of gaming as a profession are some of the factors that can help boost the Internet Cafe business.

Professional Competitive Gaming or eSports encompasses a wide variety of video games, all of which requires quick nimble fingers and a fast brain to succeed. Just as with traditional sports, fans follow teams and players, watch matches, read and analyze match results.

In the Philippines, one can even draw a parallel between basketball and eSports. Here, every street has a basketball court. Some are small half courts, some are full courts and some are arenas. Players are fueled by the presence of these courts as well as the popularity of Basketball Leagues – the NBA and the PBA. Now replace Basketball Courts with Internet Cafes and Basketball Leagues with eSports.

The rise of eSports will give birth to new type of Internet Café patrons. Those that are not only playing for fun, but for prestige and a shot at eSport glory.

But in any business, you need to plan carefully, assess your situation, set goals then execute.

The Internet Cafe business is still profitable as evidenced by the healthy number TNCs, Mineskis and Netopias as well as individual corner shops. Although admittedly the margins are lower compared a decade ago.

I won’t concentrate on teaching you what you probably know  — like building a balanced computer build. Having a robust network. Maximizing operating efficiency. These are what you need to build your Internet Cafe Business.

What I will teach you is how to GROW your business  — Social media marketing. Adding revenue streams. Systems and processes. New opportunities.

It’s not the same business that you grew up with. Be equipped to face the challenge.
